1917

Humble Beginnings

A.E. Kountz began to practice law in a firm called Schuyler & Kountz. A few years later, A.E. Kountz and Clarence A. Fry combined their practices as Kountz & Fry. In 1943, lawyers Kountz and Fry joined with Austin L. Staley and William A. Meyer to form Kountz, Fry, Staley & Meyer.

1950

Presidential Appointment

President Truman appointed Austin Staley to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, of which he later became Chief Judge. The firm was known as Kountz, Fry & Meyer from 1950 until 1965, when, following the retirement of A. E. Kountz and Clarence Fry, the firm became Meyer, Unkovic & Scott.

William A. Meyer led this transition and was a leading member of the bar throughout his long and distinguished career.

Giving Back

Alexander Unkovic gave generously of his time to his profession and during his career was President of both the Pennsylvania and Allegheny County Bar Associations, the first President of the Pennsylvania Legal Services Center, and Chairman of The Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.

Firm Growth

Howard I. Scott served as Managing Partner for nearly 20 years, from 1967-1987, during which the firm more than tripled in size.

William P. (“Pat”) Getty served as Managing Partner from 1988-1989.

Robert Mauro served as Managing Partner from 1990-2005 and is a member of the firm’s Real Estate & Lending Group.

Kevin F. McKeegan served as Managing Partner from 2006-2011 and is a member of the firm’s Corporate & Business Law Group.

Patricia L. Dodge served as Managing Partner from 2012-2017. She remained on the firm’s Management Committee until 2019 when she was appointed a Federal District Magistrate Judge.

Christopher P. Smith, Jr. was elected as Managing Partner in 2018, and leads the firm while maintaining his practice as a member of the firm’s Real Estate & Lending and Creditors’ Rights & Bankruptcy Groups.
